When it comes to the quality of our food, we are continually pushing for perfection. But we also appreciate that there is an innate beauty in the imperfection that surrounds us in nature.
We love originality, and things that are handmade (much like our products!) which is why we’ve become enamoured with the concept of ‘Wabi-sabi’: an embrace of imperfection and impermanence.
Leonard Koren, author of “Wabi-Sabi: for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers,” tried unsuccessfully to discover a precise definition while researching his book.
He eventually coined his own, which has become the standard Western definition: “Wabi-sabi is the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete, the antithesis of our classical Western notion of beauty as something perfect, enduring, and monumental.” Wabi-sabi is an ancient aesthetic philosophy rooted in Zen Buddhism and celebrates beauty in the natural, flaws and all.
