Sustainability

Ever since we opened our first Wishbone store, we have listened carefully to what our customers have wanted. We know you care about the environment – so do we.

After sitting down to talk about how we can make Wishbone a more sustainable company, we asked our customers what they’d like us to tackle first. The answer was ‘our packaging’. Some customers were concerned that we ‘use too many layers of packaging…and too much plastic that can’t be recycled’. And so we got to work.

Below are a few things we’ve addressed already. It’s a start towards making a difference.

Biodegradable Soup Bowls
Made from a material derived from sugar cane we've sourced soup bowls that degrade completely within 90 days under normal compostable conditions.

Chilled Tortilla Wrap Packaging
The cardboard used to package our Chilled Tortilla Wraps is fully recyclable, biodegradable and compostable. It's made from 30% recycled paper/card and 70% virgin board from sustainable forests. No polyethylene, no plastic! The clear film sealing our Chilled Tortilla Wraps is made from renewable wood pulp and is completely compostable in your garden.

Eco bags
We know that walking down the street balancing a flat white in one hand and paella and a muffin in the other is quite a challenge. To avoid this, and the unnecessary use of nasty plastic bags, we’ve produced an eco bag which can be recycled (and used again and again at work or home). They decompose naturally and at a cost of $3 - we hope you’ll agree they’re worth it. So next time you’re instore, please let us know if you don’t need a plastic bag or would prefer to buy an eco bag instead.

Clean and Green
We’re staying green while we clean by choosing to use an eco-friendly chemical supplier, the Ecology Systems range of biodegradable cleaners and sanitisers help us to minimize our impact on the environment. We also recycle our plastic containers back through our cleaning supplier to lessen our volume of plastics entering the community landfill.

On the horizon:
We know there are hundreds of little things we can do to make a difference. While it’s a huge job, we’re committed to making Wishbone more sustainable one step at a time.  So please keep your ideas coming.

We’re currently looking into: sustainable packaging for all our products, recycling (in our stores and at HQ), more efficient forms of energy and reducing our use of water. We’ll be sure to keep you posted with our progress along the way.

Unfortunately, being more sustainable does comes at a cost. A cost to you, our customers (e.g sustainable packaging is currently more expensive), or a cost to the environment. So with that in mind we’ll continue in our quest to do the right thing, by you and the environment.
